The names dissecting, or tissue, forceps aresomewhat descriptive of their use. They are really the left hand SURGICAL INSTRUMENTS 287 of the operator. They closely resemble large tweezers in appear-ance and, with them, the operator grasps and steadies the tissuesimmediately under his attention, using them for the thousandand one purposes for which the fingers of the left hand wouldordinarily be called into play were they not too slippery and cum-bersome for delicate work. These instruments are generally de-scribed as smooth or mouse-tooth (or even rat-tooth, or merelytooth) forceps, according to whether the grasping tip is or is notarmed with teeth to make a more secure hold po
