Hyalite is a variety of opal, a hydrated, amorphous silica (SiO2) deposited from silica-bearing waters in voids and fissures of certain rock formations. Hyalite usually occurs in clear and glassy globular form but more rarely may display opalescent colours. Attractively coloured hyalite is used in jewellery.
