Southern Greenland. Satellite image of the southern coast of Greenland. This island is surrounded by the northern Atlantic Ocean (blue/black) to the south. It is covered in snow and ice (white) for most of the year. A bloom of phytoplankton (light blue, lower left) is seen off the south-western coast of the island. Phytoplankton are microscopic, photosynthetic plants and algae. A bloom is a sudden proliferation in phytoplankton numbers, which may be caused by a sudden local increase in nutrients. Image taken by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MODIS) on NASA's Terra satellite.
