Vestal & Son's Illustrated and Descriptive Catalogue. 81 STRAWBERRIES. New, Rare and Standard Sorts for the Spring and Fall of 1902. PIRST of the small fruits in the spring- comes the beautiful, wholesome and appetizing- strawberry. Its importance as a source of revenue is yearly increasing with the improved varieties and more eco- nomical methods of culture. Our markets are well and cheaply supplied with this wholesome fruit, but those who would know what delicious strawberries are must have them fresh from the vines, and may with a careful selection of a few hundred plants, say in a half dozen varieties, prolong the season of ripen- ing for a period of four to eight weeks. Some varieties do better in some localities than others, but this can only be found out by trial. Where selections of varieties are left to us we send only those that suc- ceed best here, strictly pure and true to name, including earliest, medium and latest varieties, with suitable varieties for fertilizing, to expand the season to its full limit. A well kept strawberry bed is an ornament to any garden, and the labor required to keep it in order is a pleasant pastime when one has in mind the rich treat in store for him. They delight in a moist, rich soil ; any ordinary soil will grow strawberries, although they will amply repay by fertilizing freely with any good fertilizer at your command. Good barnyard manure, well rotted, is perhaps the best and most easily obtained. Either well mixed in the soil or used as a mulch or top dressing, will amply repay you with large berries and plenty of them. Avoid planting under or near trees, as they dislike shade. For field culture plant in rows 4 feet apart, with the plants 1 foot apart in the row; for garden or hill culture, 12 to 15 inches apart each way in the beds 4
