THISTLE (left) was the 7th Challenger for the Cup and lost 2:0 to Charles Jackson Paine’s, yacht VOLUNTEER, representing the New York Yacht Club. This is as they appeared below the Narrows in the first race of the seventh challenge contest for the America’s Cup (and the last sailed over New York Yacht Club inside course) September 1887. The picture illustrates the light conditions under which races were sailed on this course. A pen drawing by W.
