This hellish landmark was created when a drill at the gas mine was collapsed, and the Soviet authorities, back in the 70's, decided to set the crater in fire in order for the methane to burn out. Five decades later the fires are still burning, thus creating the most remarkable sightseeing attraction in Turkmenistan.
