Thomas Hardy: 1840-1928 The name of the writer Thomas Hardy will be for ever inextricably linked with that of his home town Dorchester and to the county of Dorset, which he loved. Dorchester is portrayed in many of his novels, he gave it the fictional name Casterbridge. The rugged yet beautiful landscape of rural Dorset provides the stage upon which most of his tales are set, it is a constant brooding presence throughout his work. The stories of Thomas Hardy are as popular and well known today as they ever were, many of them have been dramatised for cinema and television, bringing them to a new audience of millions worldwide. Among these are such titles as “Far from the Madding Crowd”, “Jude the obscure”, Tess of the D’Urbavilles” and ”The Mayor of Casterbridge”. This statue of Hardy was created by the artist and sculptor Eric Kennington RA and was unveiled by Hardy’s friend James Barrie on the 2nd September 1931. It is located upon the old Roman ramparts beside the main western approach to Dorchester.
