First Lady Astronaut Trainees. Seven members of the First Lady Astronaut Trainees (FLATs, also known as the 'Mercury 13') standing outside NASA's Launch Pad 39B near the Space Shuttle Discovery. From left: Gene Nora Jessen, Wally Funk, Jerrie Cobb, Jerri Truhill, Sarah Rutley, Myrtle Cagle and Bernice Steadman. The FLATs were a group of women who trained to become astronauts for Americas first human spaceflight program in the early 1960s. Although this FLATs effort was never an official NASA program, they helped pave the way for the first female Shuttle pilot, Eileen Collins. Here they are visiting as guests. Photographed at the John F. Kennedy Space Center, Florida, USA, in 1995.
