Closed fence at the "Yerseke Moer", a protected peat meadow area near Yerseke, Zuid-Beveland, Zeeland, The Netherlands
Wikipedia: The Yerseke Moer is a peat meadow area in the Dutch province of Zeeland on South Beveland, between Yerseke, Wemeldinge and Kapelle. The area of 484 hectares, east of the Canal through Zuid-Beveland, is owned by the Het Zeeuwse Landschap Foundation. It is a former salt marsh complex that was closed off from the sea about 1000 years ago by a ring dike. It consists of meadows with height differences. Yet the original structure of the salt marsh complex can still be recognized. The meadows lie on sandy creek ridges and lower basin soil. On top is a thin clay layer that lies on a thick peat layer. Before the embankment, the larger creeks, together with the adjacent embankments, were transformed into broad creek ridges. Roads have often been built on these large creek ridges and in the former beds. The adjacent high embankments have often been used as agricultural fields. Only pastureland was possible in the low-lying basins, mainly due to the presence of a salty peat layer in the subsoil. In the Middle Ages, this peat was excavated on a large scale for salt production: the so-called mooring. This created a typical relief, which used to be generally found in the Zeeland "oudland". The Yerseke Moer owes its name to the former salt production, the moernering. Due to the great variation in soil factors and the locally occurring saline seepage, ten different vegetation types can be distinguished: fresh and saline grasslands and also pioneer communities. A walking route has been marked out in the area right through the meadows, which is freely accessible during part of the year.
