Twelve years before the first instruction wasattempted the universitys foundation was laid in the LandGrant Act of Congress, passed July 2, 1862. The State of Indi-ana, three years later, obligated itself to establish a universityby the acceptance of the gifts and conditions of this act. Whenthe citizens of Tippecanoe County gave the State $230,000 forthe project, the Legislature of 1869 located the institution atLafayette, and in consideration of a donation of $150,000 byJohn Purdue, his name was given to the embryo institution.
