The absolute city debt, both permanent and temporary, in May, 1843, asmeasured by its stocks, bonds and checks outstanding, was thirteen millionsix hundred and ninety-seven thousand Hiree hundred and twenty-three dollarsand thirty-three cents. This sum. however, included a nominal debt to thecommissioners of the sinking fund, as holders of its stocks, to the amount ofnine hundred and sixty-live thousand eight hundred and five dollars. Withthis proper deduction the whole absolute debt may be stated at twelve millionseven hundred and thirty-one thousand five hundred and eighteen dollars andthirty-three cents.
