On the bridge of SS 'Vaterland' c. 1914. The ship was built in1913 for the Hamburg America Line by Blohm and Voss at Hamburg, Germany for the trans-Atlantic passenger route. She was the largest passenger ship in the world on completion. Vaterland had made only a few voyages before being immobilised for nearly three years during World War I. In 1917, she was seized by the USA government and renamed 'Leviathan'. She became a troopship during World War I and later the flagship of the United States Lines.
