The Street railway journal . ay methods to fulfil the re-quirements of high-speed interurban operation, still the adapta-tion of the general principles developed in steam railroad oper- The American Locomotive Company, appreciating the demandfor a truck to fulfil these requirements, has made a carefulstudy of the subject from both standpoints, and has suc-ceeded in this design in producing a truck which will elimi-nate many of the difficulties that have been encountered invarious other truck designs. The valuable past experience ofthis company in the construction of steam locomotives and pas-senger and freight trucks^has enabled it to adapt the most ap-proved principles of steam railroad truck design to the require-ments of electrical operation, with the certainty of securingnot only strength and durability, but also easy riding qualitiesand safety under the extreme conditions of rough track, wornspecial work, etc., usually met on interurban lines. This newtruck is herewith illustrated both by drawings and photo-. DETAILS OF NEW STEEL MOTOR TRUCK, SHOWING NOVEL SWING LINK AND SIDE BEARING CONSTRUCTION ation was extremely difficult owing to the lack of similar oper-ating conditions, not only as to roadbeds operated over, but alsoto .the motive power. The question of design in the case of atruck for heavy passenger cars in steam railroad operation isexceedingly simple as compared with that in the case of heavyinterurban and elevated elestric railways, where, in additionto carrying the weight of the heavy passenger car, the truckmust also carry the weight of two large motors and also becapable of withstanding the shocks and blows made in trans-mitting the force exerted by the motors in accelerating thecar body. The new design of truck which is illustrated in this article isan example of a most successful application of the principlesof truck construction, as developed for modern heavy passen-ger traffic conditions upon steam railroads, to the peculiar con-ditions met
