Burgess, Madison, Wis.] Materials : i skein each of Barbours flax embroidery thread, size8, shades 50, 57, 63, 69, and 80 ; a needle large enough to carry thethread without fraying; a square of pale blue twilled silk, and the same of pink lining-silk,if intended for a glove orhandkerchief sachet. Thematerial for working onshould be chosen withreference to the use forwhich the embroideredpiece is designed. The spray is worked insatin, outline, and French-knot stitches, and isquickly executed. Tracethe design lightly. Be-ginning with the outeredge of the roses, worka row of irregular stitches,extending toward the cen-tre, with shade 80 ; thenwith the darker pink,shade 63, fill in from thecentre, letting the stitches. LEAF DOILY. 107 fill in between those first made. In the centre work a little clusterof French knots with yellow, shade 5 7, taking several long stitcheswith this out from the centre, and ending with a French knot. Theouter edges of the large leaves are worked in the same way as theroses, with the lighter green, shade 50, and filled in from the centrewith shade 69. The sepals of the roses are also worked in this shade,with which also the outlining of the stems and centre veins of thelarge leaves is done. The possession of a color-card of Barbours flax embroidery threadsopens a large range of possibilities to the lover of fancy flosses adapt themselves as beautifully to Kensington embroid-ery as to outlining, etc., and — having work which has been washedmany times — I find the colors perfectly fast.
