Golden, early morning light glows on the north slope of Pikes Peak from a viewpoint just west of Woodland Park, Colorado, USA

Pikes Peak rises to 14,115 feet above sea level, and is the most easterly of Colorado's 53 Fourteeners. The summit of this mountain is the most visited in the United States, and second in the world. The north slope of the massif seems much lower due to the elevation of the surrounding topography in Teller County near Woodland Park, Colorado.(elevation 8,465 feet). The mountain is composed of pink Pikes Peak granite. The Ute name for the mountain was 'Tava,' meaning 'sun.' The song, "America the Beautiful," was inspired by Pikes Peak. The upper portion of the peak was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1961.
