After many months of going through the approval process, the fourth-highest individual military award, the Bronze Star, was given to Sgt. Jeffery Johanson and Sgt. Nathaniel Warvi was pinned the Soldier’s Medal, a rare occasion in the Army National Guard, for his actions in July 2012 in Afghanistan in which he came to the aid of injured driver of an overturned vehicle. Warvi used his MRAP recovery vehicle to lift the vehicle and pull the man to safety. Maj. Gen. Lawrence Haskins, commander of the California Army National Guard, his CSM, Command Sgt. Maj. Harold London, and other key leaders from the 579th Engineer Battalion, the 49th Military Police Brigade, and family and friends were on hand to congratulate them. Afterwards the unit took some of their boats and a bridge onto Humboldt Bay for training as they prepare for annual training in the summer. ( Army National Guard photo by Sgt. Susan Wohle)
