False-colour transmission electron micrograph of a field of whooping cough bacteria, Bordetella pertussis. A few of the bacteria are undergoing cell division appeared pinched in at the waist as a prelude to splitting into two cells. Whooping cough bacteria parasitise only humans. They cause a respiratory tract infection characterised by fits of coughing that end in loud inspiratory whoops. The infection usually occurs in childhood, although adults are sometimes affected. It is potentially fatal in infancy. Magnification: x6000 at size.
