The two Spanish uniformed officers were the first Spanish Guardia Civil officers to attend a Queens Birthday Parade since the closure of the land border in the late 1960's. In recent months tensions between Gibraltar and Spain have continued as Spanish Guardia Civil vessels have continued their incursions into Gibraltar waters as Spain continues to claim sovereignty over Gibraltar. The acceptance of the invitation has been described by a Convent official source as a possibel gesture which shows gaps can be bridged.
