"Although prices fluctuate, the grower can receive anywhere from 80 cents to $1 per stem, so it is a very economical crop to produce," says Butt. "I don't think the industry feels there is opportunity for significant increase in production in Alberta, but hopefully through research work we can develop improved varieties and broaden suitable growing ; The Brooks specialist will also be conducting variety trials with some new potted plants in the near future. Butt says she expects to be taking a look at new varieties of Anemone and Asiatic Lilies. These flowers, which can also be produced for the cut-flower market, are grown in Alberta on a limited scale.
