Michael Elliott (1924-2007), British chemist, with a model of a molecule of the insecticide deltamethrin. Elliot is in a greenhouse at the Rothamstead Experimental Station, Harpenden, Hertfordshire, England, where he and his colleagues carried out research in the 1960s and 1970s into insecticides. The synthetic pyrethroids, the class of insecticides they developed, are relatively benign to the environment and still in widespread use over 30 years later. Photographed in 1989.
