Duringthe < ivil War there was moreactual use of the bayonetthan since, but the presence. of the bayonet still gives amoral effect both to the de-fender and assailant. Theupper photograph shows two24-pounder smooth-bore gunsin Fort C. F. Smith in the de-fenses of Washington. Thecarriages are those usuallyused with siege guns, theheavy scooped-out block onthe trail being for the purposeof holding the base of the gunwhen it was being trans-ported. These 24-pounderswere for short range.
