Firecrest (Regulus ignicapillus), Abruzzo, Italy

The Firecrest (Regulus ignicapillus) is a minute bird that is very similar to the Goldcrest, but has a more southern distribution in Europe. It prefers conifers but can also adapt to living in deciduous woods. It is mainly resident, and is often detected by its very high-pitched notes. It builds a spectacular nest that is very well-hidden, tucked away just under a horizontal bough.
