Grey sky portrait Fryderyk Chopin Sculpture in front of Centurion House office building, Deansgate, Manchester, UK
The sculpture, created by polish sculptor, Robert Sobocinski, depicts 'Chopin at the piano gazing across at his muse, Baroness Aurore Lucile Dupon. Carved into the work is an eagle in flight, the symbol of Poland for over a thousand years, and a battle scene representing the Polish fight for freedom.' An information plaque reads: 'Fryderyk Chopin was one of the world's greatest composers. His compositions combined elements of his beloved Polish culture with universal ones, which gave his music international appeal. He visited Manchester in the year before his death, at the early age of 39. On Monday, August 28th 1848 a gravely ill Fryderyk Chopin gave a Gala Concert before a rapturous audience of 1200 at the Gentleman's Concert Hall, which was situated at the corner of Peter Street and Lower Mosley Street. Despite serious ill-health he insisted that he would perform, a fact which has forever endeared him to Mancunians and music lovers everywhere.' Property company, Bruntwood, largely funding the sculpture, had space for it outside their Centurion House office building on Deansgate, opposite Spinningfields Square. The sculpture, celebrating Chopin's visit to Manchester in 1848 and the 200th anniversary of his birth in 1810, was unveiled Friday 16 September 2011.
