Southport, Merseyside, UK. UK Weather. 13th March, 2017. Yellow hues as the sun sets in a cloudy sky, as a Shrimper returns after 'shanking' at low water on the Mersey estuary. Horse-drawn carts traditionally, or now mechanical amphibious craft vehicles trawl nets behind boats, known as ‘shanking'. Another method consists of pushing a net along the sea bed, on the vast tidal sands, to catch the shrimps and is known as ‘putting'. Beach shrimping is all that remains of a once-vibrant fishing industry in the resort. Credit: MediaWorldIImages/AlamyLiveNews.

Shrimps are trawled, or ‘scanked’ at low tide, cleaned and boiled on board the vehicles during the drive back up the beach and then taken back to be shelled and, more often than not, potted in individual pots for sale in local and national shops as a delicacy. What was once a readily available local food of the people has once again become a rare and fine dining experience. Source.
