TrainmasterStevens was carried down stream half amile, when the timber on which he wasriding went under a heavy drift of cornstalks, leaving him hanging on the edgeof the drift. By working as only a drown-ing man can work, he finally succeeded ingetting up on the drift and catching holdof a small limb,and finally was able to pul 1himself up to the forks of a tree, wherehe remained until rescued.
