Este gigante roedor fu extinto de la zona norte de México hace 80 años. Actualmente esta especie de mamífero habita en la cuenca de el rio San Pedro de la región y en especifico en los arroyos de la reserva privada Rancho los Fresnos a cargo de la Asociación Civil Naturalia Se estima que la creación de diques de este animal ha beneficiando a los ranchos cercanos por la retención de agua hacia el sub suelo
