He, with his mother, a widow, and her brother,Thomas Patterson, who was the father of Gov. William Patterson, came toAmerica when he was ten years old. He was brought up under the supervision ofhis uncle, Thomas Patterson, and educated by him. He became a prosperousmerchant and a large landowner. He was a shrewd, sagacious man whogenerally succeeded in his undertakings. He was one of the founders ofthe Baptist Church in Anwell Township, in 176;. which was the first in the town-ship. In 1775 he was a member from Hunterdon County, of the Provincial Con-gress, and in 1791-2 was a member of the Legislative Assembly from that June iS, 1776, he was commissioned
