The length of this tubularsegment, from renal corpuscle to the region of the small cross,is approximately mm. The medullary loop (loop of Ilenle)extends for a distance into the medulla. In the teased prepara-tion it was not jiossible to determine dehnitely the characterof its epithelium, though the proximal arm appears stainedslightly lighter than the distal arm as though lined by a thinnerepithelium. The distal arm returns towartl the cortex andcomes in close relation with the renal corpuscle of the tubule, this relation is not shown in the mounted preparation but , TUBULES OK VERTEBRATES :i33 Fig. 19 Renal tubule of bird, Gallus domestica, isolated by teasing from thecentral jwrtinn of a renal lobule. The distal convoluted portion, upper rightof figure, presents two more prominent loops each with severalsecondary loops. Before teasing, this portion was compactlyarranged and has a length of mm. It is followed l\v a longconnecting or junctional tubular segment leading to the col-lecting duct, and adding nmi. to the length of the tube. Asmay be seen from the figur
