The hand of an arboreal crested black gibbon reaching through the bars of it's cage in Xinshuangbanna National Park, China

This is the hand of a captive crested black gibbon reaching through the bars of it's cage towards the camera begging for food. The photograph emphasizes the dichotomy between tourism and the treatment of the animals the tourists wish to see in the Xishuangbanna, National Park, Yunnan province, China. This Park is visited mainly by Chinese tourists but increasingly by Western travelers too. The animals are brutally trained to perform for the tourists, gibbons are one such show. Gibbons, a strictly arboreal creature that moves through the trees using its arms to swing, are trained to caper on the ground standing on their legs. The training is not by repetition and reward. In between performances these animals live in cramped, generally over crowded and unsatisfactory conditions.
