An old cigarette card (c. 1929) with a portrait of Alberto Santos-Dumont (1873–1932) and an illustration of his airship. Dumont was a Brazilian inventor and aviation pioneer in the development of lighter-than-air and heavier-than-air aircraft. Santos-Dumont worked in Paris, where he spent most of his adult life. In his early career he designed and flew hot air balloons and won the Deutsch de la Meurthe prize in 1901 for a flight that rounded the Eiffel Tower. In 1906 his 14-bis made the first powered heavier-than-air flight in Europe. He did not patent his innovations.

An old cigarette card (c. 1929) with a portrait of Alberto Santos-Dumont (1873–1932) and an illustration of his airship. Dumont was a Brazilian inventor and aviation pioneer contributing significantly to the development of both lighter-than-air and heavier-than-air aircraft. Santos-Dumont dedicated himself to aeronautical study and experimentation in Paris, where he spent most of his adult life. In his early career he designed, built, and flew hot air balloons and early dirigibles, culminating in his winning the Deutsch de la Meurthe prize in 1901 for a flight that rounded the Eiffel Tower. He then turned to heavier-than-air machines, and in 1906 his 14-bis made the first powered heavier-than-air flight in Europe to be certified by the Aéro-Club de France and the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale. His conviction that aviation would usher in an era of worldwide peace and prosperity led him to freely publish his designs and forgo patenting his various innovations. This card is from a 1929 set entitled 'Scientific Inventions and Discoveries' (35 cards in the series). The firm of R and J Hill Cigarettes was established on Shoreditch High Street, Hackney, London in the 1700s. In the twentieth century the company issued cards with their Sunripe and Spinet Oval cigarettes. The firm expanded to include H Archer and Co and issued cards, like this set, under 'The Spinet House' brand. The company no longer exists.
