Psoriasis affecting the elbow. Psoriasis is one of the most common skin diseases. It involves a ten- fold increase in the speed of epidermal cell proliferation, normally at localised sites at the elbows, forearms, knees and scalp. This results in the formation of well-defined plaques, the colour & form of which varies considerably, from pink to silver. More extreme cases can affect the whole body causing considerable disability. Drugs that are known to cure psoriasis have side effects, but palliative alternatives such as coal tar preparations tend to be cosmetically unacceptable.
