Happy New Year celebrations as crowds enjoy amusement rides with lights in Manchester, UK January, 2014. This year for the first time Piccadilly Gardens hosted Manchester's privately sponsored New Year's Eve celebrations and fireworks display. The event featured a 10-minute firework display, ferris wheel, park, fun, sky, amusement, entertainment, travel, city, carnival, fair, ride, blue, carousel, attraction, leisure, festival, night circle. New Years Eve Big Wheel rides on the 60m-high, 42 pod spinning ride until 1am.
"Thousands of people gathered in Manchester's Piccadilly Gardens to welcome in the New Year. Fireworks bloomed above the city's new Big Wheel and crowds danced and cheered during a massive party to bring in 2014. For the first time, the event was hosted in Piccadilly Gardens rather than Albert Square but the celebrations were just as thunderous. Before the event kicked-off, around 8,000 people fell completely silent to remember teenager Adam Pickup, who was found dead in Castlefield on Monday afternoon. The poignant and sombre moment, at , was an incredible show of solidarity for the 17-year-old's family. After the moment's silence, celebrations officially started. As midnight approached, the gardens staged a world record attempt, hosted, of course, by Councillor Pat Karney. The crowds tried to beat the highest number of Mancunians dancing to Michael Jackson songs in one place. Coun Karney will send the details to the Guinness Book of Records next week. He said: "It was the best New Year we've ever had in Manchester. It was like the centre of Manhattan.
