In 1984, world production exceeded billion tonnes. If all the world's cereal crop was consumed directly by the human population, everyone could obtain an adequate supply of carbohydrate and protein; however a large proportion of cereal production, especially in affluent nations, is used as animal feed to boost the production of meat, milk, butter and eggs.
