What The WorcesterS/^v said of Mr. Hoar when he was elected dis-trict attorney is very fitting at the close of his serviceas he enters upon a new career in the public service:In all his official acts, Mr. Hoar has been scrupu-lously painstaking, no matter what degree of im-portance was attached to them and his tenure of theoffice of assistant district attorney was characterizedby a measure of success that augurs well for a satis-factory administration of the department with himas chief. He was ap-pointed aide-de-camp on the staff of Governor OliverAmes and served from 1887 to 1890 with the rankof colonel. He was appointed judge advocate gen-eral on the staff of Governor Roger VVolcott in 1897and served four years, acting as president of themilitary board of officers, having charge of theequipment of the ^Massachusetts troops in the warof 1S98 with Spain.
