The first edition of the CLAY MELODIST, com-prising seven thousand copies, was issued in the autumnof 1842, immediately after the enthusiastic nomination ofHenry Clay and John Davis by the Mass Convention atFaneuil Hall. It was the first publication of the kindin the then opening campaign, and, although several oth-er works, modelled upon it, have since appeared, it isbelieved no one of them has attained so wide a popularityas the original Melodist.
