Scott. Chicago and Milwaukee thenhad a few hundred inhabitants, and Gurdon S. Hubbards trail from theformer city to Kaskaskia led almost through a Avilderness. Thewater courses of the lakes and rivers furnished transportation to thesecond great army of immigrants, and about 1850 railroads werepushed to that extent that the crisis of 1837 was precipitated upon us.
