Solar Eclipse. Full eclipse of the Sun showing a solar flare (red) at upper centre and a diamond ring effect (at upper right) caused by a tiny part of the solar disk appearing before the rest. A solar eclipse is caused when the moon passes between the Earth and the Sun. Solar flares are often visible at eclipses because the moon blocks out the sunlight which normally drowns out these features. Solar flares consist of a stream of charged particles and are associated with sunspots. The diamond ring effect occurs immediately before or after totality and is caused by irregularities in the Moon's surface. Photographed at Dundlod, India, in October 1995.
