It is best to set cabbage in rows both ways, orcheck-row them, as it is often called. This will permit theuse of a cultivator in keeping down all weeds between theplants as well as in the rows. Where the plants are closertogether than 24 inches in the row, I use a spiked-tooth cultivator in going crosswise of the rows; usuallyone cannot get through more than twice or three times CULTIVATION 63 crosswise, as the leaves will be too large. While theplants are small, the deep cultivation the spike-tooth willgive will do no harm, as the ground has not yet becomefilled with roots (Fig. 18).
