About natural size. (After Quaintance and Brues.) one of the most difficult of insect pests to control. It has been found that the fall plowing of the corn- fields destroys practically all the pupae of this insect. It is possible to reduce the injury from twenty-five to forty per cent by early planting, so that the plants will have passed the silking stage before the insects emerge. One may protect sweet corn by keeping the silks dusted with powdered arsenate of lead from the time.
