A diamond with its grading certificate. Diamonds are classified by weight (in carats), colour, clarity (the presence of flaws), cut and degree of fluorescence. As well as determining its value, these characteristics can give a diamond a unique identity. This diamond has been sealed in a plastic case along with a copy of its certificate on microfilm. Diamond is a form of carbon, and is the hardest known mineral.
