The Tellurian, which is represented at Fig. 13, furnishesbetter and clearer illustrations than can otherwise be givenof many interesting and important phenomena, amongwhich are the sucession of day and night; the changes ofthe seasons; the varying length of days and nights at dif-ferent seasons of the year ; the rising of the Sun north ofeast, and its setting north of west, in the Summer, and itsrising and setting south of these points in the Winter; thechanges of the Moon; solar and lunar eclipses: springand neap tides; the later daily recurrence of the tides;the length of days on the Moon; the appearance of theEarth to observers on the Moon; the Harvest Moon; andthe difference between a solar and the sideriai year. Allof these, and other phenomena, may be explained by theuse of the Tellurian, or Season Machine, as it is sometimescalled, with a clearness and simplicity that bring themwithin the comprehension of children.
