Female house sparrow (Passer domesticus) perched on a branch. Originally from Eurasia, the Middle East and North Africa, house sparrows have been introduced to North and South America, as well as to southern Africa and Australia. While they are primarily seed eaters, they also eat worms, fruit and kitchen scraps, enabling them to prosper in many urban environments. Males have black on the throat, upper breast and between the bill and eyes, whereas the females do not. Photographed in Israel, in February.
