The first traces of a church in Deinze go back to the 9th century. The Holy Poppo (1978 +1048), the abbot of Stavelot, was born in Deinze. On his return from the Holy Land he donated relics to the church. The current building was erected after a fire in the 14th century and is considered a fine example of Scheldegotiek. In 1988, the first large third-carrot in the world was installed in the tower.
