TUBEECULOUS DISEASE OF TEE HIP-JOINT. 369 If the patient is seen early before deformity has appeared theshort spica is applied without preliminary traction and locomo-tion is permitted if the symptoms indicate that the joint willtolerate it. This treatment in which the degree of protection is adaptedto the character of the disease differs from that of Lorenz, whichis practically a routine ambulatory treatment by the short spica,as decidedly as from the routine treatment by braces. The principles are those that govern the treatment of tuber- FiG. A pelvic support in use. It is a compromise be-tween the treatment of the local disease and the effect of thistreatment upon the limb and upon the patient. Thus, acutesymptoms at any stage of the disease indicate the long spicaand traction; discomfort, a lessened activity and relief fromweight bearing. If, however, the local disease is quiescent, weight bearing without motion improves the nutrition of thelimb and that of the body in 370 OETHOPEDIC SUSGEEY. It is a better protection thanthe less comprehensive fonxis in that it prevents movements ofthe leg, diminishes the jar on a sensitive joint and enclosingthe foot lessens the danger of oedema in the exposed extremity.
