Philipp von Siebold. Bust of Philipp Franz Balthasar von Siebold (1796-1866), German physician and teacher. Von Siebold was the first European to teach Western medicine in Japan. He lived and worked on Dejima, the artificial island next to Nagasaki. Von Siebold's patients paid him with a variety of everyday objects and artefacts that later gained historical significance as a large ethnographic collection, and evolved into the National Museum of Ethnology in Leiden, Netherlands. His study of endemic Japanese flora and fauna gained him much recognition, and he is credited with bringing tea from Japan and starting the tea culture in Java, a Dutch colony at the time.
