Young Josephs earlyeducation was received from a private tutor, wholived in his fathers family. Afterward he was sentto an academy, and completed his education inSchenectady. He then entered the law office of hisfathers cousin, Peter Y. Yates, in Albany, and stud-ied law, being finally admitted to practice, when heopened an office in his native town. He became ashrewd and able lawyer and a public-spirited citizen,and was one of those who founded Union 1798 Schenectady was incorporated as a city, andMr. Yates was selected as the first mayor. He be-longed to the republican party of the time, butchiefly occupied himself with the practice of his pro-fession. In 1805, however, he was elected to the. state sen and in 1808 was appointed one of thejudges of the supreme court of the state, a positionwhich he continued to hold for fourteen years. Asa judge he was distinguished for his plain and practi-cal common sense, his uprightness and impartiality,and his courtesy of manner.
