The tracer is drawn across the surfacewhose roughness it is desired to measure, and the metershows a continuous running average of the height of thesurface irregularities. It is cahbrated directly in millionthsof an inch, and has different ranges to cover the various de-grees of roughness found in practice. It serves as an ac-curate and rapid means for measuring roughness, and mark-ed improvements in the production, and life of machine partshave been obtained with the aid of this instrument. Diasfnosing Fundamental Causes of Noise fromSound Measurements. It often happens that acoustical measurements yield un-expected but very definite information concerning the mechan-ism of a machine and indicate where improvements may bemade to advantage. Fig. 4 shows a large reduction gear onwhich this was done. The initial purpose of the work was to determine noisespecifications for this type of unit so that a central-stationcompany could include them in the order for their next
