Reinserting a fingernail, illustration. As shown here, it is possible for the nail to be reinserted into the nailbed after an injury to the finger that results in detachment of the nail. This allows the old nail to protect the finger while a new nail regrows from the nailbed. This sagittal section of the finger shows the distal phalanx (finger bone).
