Illustrations of the right hip joint from the front (upper), from behind (middle) and the socket. The strong articular capsule of the hip joint is reinforced by accessory ligaments. The strongest of these is in front, the iliofemoral ligament. Medial to it is the pubofemoral ligament, and behind is the ischiofemoral ligament. The socket or acetabulum for the head of the femur (thigh bone) is deepened by the circular glenoid lip or labrum made of fibrocartilage. From Sobotta, J. (1904) Atlas der deskriptiven Anatomie des Menschen. Vol 1, Knochen, Bander, Gelenke, und Muskeln. J. F. Lehmann, Munchen (Figs. 213, 214, 215).
