Jeremy Bentham (1748-1832), British philosopher. Portrait of the linguist, philosopher, political activist and legal scholar, Jeremy Bentham. Best known as the architect of utilitarianism, or philosophical radicalism, Bentham was also a propounder of the Suez and Panama canals. Utilitarianism is a form of hedonism in which the objective is greatest happiness for the greatest number of people. Bentham founded University College London (UCL) in 1826 to provide accessible education to those outside the Church of England. At his request, his embalmed body still resides in a glass cabinet at UCL. Taken from a book published in 1849.
